30 years of listening, building and creating

My path to the AI Video Studio 4K didn’t start yesterday. It’s the result of a journey of more than 30 years.

On one side, there is the musician and producer. I’ve spent decades on stage, mixing symphonies and composing soundtracks. I know that a video stands or falls with timing. A transition that comes a single frame too late, or audio that isn’t perfectly locked to the picture, breaks the magic.

On the other side, there is the software engineer. For the past 30 years I’ve been writing code, building systems and optimising servers. For this new studio I didn’t simply take out a subscription to an online tool. I built my own high-end hardware and wrote my own software environment. Why? Because as a developer I want full control over quality, computing power and – above all – the privacy of everyone I collaborate with.

Runway's Results

Runway’s video, on the other hand, struggled to achieve the desired result. While the overall noir atmosphere and rainy city setting were conveyed, there were noticeable shortcomings in the precision of details. Runway remains a powerful tool but seems better suited for broader artistic experiments rather than highly detailed scenes like this one.

Conclusion: Sora Leads the Way

This test shows that Sora is currently the superior choice for generating detailed and lifelike videos. The difference in quality is evident, especially in the realism of the details and animations. However, this doesn’t mean that Runway is irrelevant; it still offers interesting possibilities, particularly for projects where refinement is less critical.

The technology of AI video generation is constantly evolving. With updates and improvements, tools like Runway can enhance their performance. Additionally, VEO 2, a new player in the market, is set to launch soon. We’re eager to see how this tool will compare to the established names.

As user of this tool, I have long been impressed by its capabilities, and recently an exciting new feature has been added: the ability to automatically generate a podcast based on the documents you upload. In this article, I’ll explain what NotebookLM is, how it works, and most importantly, how you can use it in your daily work. In the world of visual effects and video production, greenscreen technology remains the most efficient and reliable method of retrospectively defining a background or environment. Although several alternative techniques have been developed in recent years, such as AI-assisted rotoscoping, greenscreen remains unbeatable in terms of flexibility, accuracy and ease of use.

AI-assisted Rotoscoping: Promising but Limited

AI rotoscoping has made significant progress and offers advantages in certain situations, especially for simple scenes. This technology can automatically extract objects or people from a video, which in theory could reduce the need for greenscreens. However, the reality is that rotoscoping, even with AI, still requires a lot of time and human intervention, especially in complex scenes with a lot of movement or fine details such as hair. For complete control and consistency, especially when it comes to replacing entire environments, greenscreen remains the superior option.

Accuracy and Control: The Benefits of Greenscreen

One of the biggest advantages of working with a greenscreen is the predictability and consistency it provides. A greenscreen provides a uniform background that can be easily and accurately removed with chroma keying. This allows videographers to use virtually any digital image as a background without the technical challenges that other methods present. No other technique offers the same level of control without significant additional time, cost or effort.

Limited Applications of Other Techniques

Although alternative technologies are available, such as LED stages or portable projection mapping, these methods have their limitations. LED stages, for example, are expensive and complex and are more suitable for real-time background projections than for post-production adjustments. Such techniques do not offer the same degree of adaptability as a green screen, especially if major changes to the background are needed after shooting.

Conclusion: greenscreen remains the King

At a time when technology is evolving rapidly, greenscreen remains the undisputed king for projects that require background adjustment after shooting. While AI rotoscoping and other methods may be useful in certain scenarios, they do not offer the same combination of simplicity, reliability and flexibility that greenscreen offers. For most video projects where space or background must be determined in post-production, greenscreen simply remains the best choice.

Thus, it remains an indispensable tool for both large and small productions looking for efficient and effective ways to create visual effects.
